What Fruits Make Sauces With

Fruit can be used in sauces for savory dishes, such as a stir-fry.

Fruit sauces can be made using virtually any kind of fresh or dried fruit, including apples, berries and pineapples. Fruit sauces can be suitable as stand-alone dishes, as with applesauce, or as relish accompaniments to savory foods such as beef, chicken, turkey or pork. Dessert sauces made with fresh fruit can be enjoyed over ice cream.

Common Fruit Sauces

The most common fruits used in fruit sauces are apples and tomatoes. Apples are used to make applesauce, which is eaten as a side dish. The tomato is actually a member of the fruit family, and is not a vegetable. As such, tomato sauce may be considered a "fruit sauce," although it's not commonly thought of in that way. Cranberries are used to make cranberry sauce, the jellied sauce that is eaten with turkey on the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States.

Fruit Relishes, Chutneys and Butters

Fruit relishes and chutneys can be used as toppings to add flavor and moisture to entrees such as chicken, turkey and pork. Cranberry relish, using cranberries and oranges, is one example. Chutney, a relish made with either fruits or vegetables and spices or vinaigrette, can be made with fruits of all types. Lemon curd is made with lemon juice, sugar, eggs and butter. Fruit butters like apple butter can be made with apples, sugar and spices. Berries can also be used to make fruit butter.

Fruit Dessert Toppings and Compotes

Fruit toppings are a refreshing complement to ice cream and frozen yogurt desserts. Strawberries, peaches, berries, bananas, pineapples and other fruits can be combined with sugar to make a sweet fruit topping. Another fruit-based dessert topping is fruit compote, which is fruit combined with spices, such as cinnamon. Again, any fruit can be used, such as apples, blueberries, peaches, and nectarines, and the compote can be eaten as a sauce over ice cream, pie or other desserts.

Fruit Sauces for Meats and Poultry

Combining fruit sauce and meat in the same dish may sound unusual, but entrees mixing sweet and savory flavors have been cooked for centuries. Apple cider stew combines stewing beef with apple cider and fresh chopped apples. A stir-fry can be made with beef, apricots and vegetables. Dried fruit like sun-dried cherries can be made into a sauce for poultry or game, and sun-dried plums can be added to barbecue sauce. An example of a tasty appetizer made with fruit and meat is bacon-wrapped apricots served with cranberry glaze on the side as dipping sauce.
