Thicken Soup With Flour

Soup

Homemade soup simmering on the stove can fill the kitchen with wonderful smells and can be a delightful meal. Sometimes a soup does not turn out as thick and hearty as desired, however. Cooks should not despair when a soup is thin, though, because this can easily be remedied with flour and liquid. Learn how easy it is to thicken soup with flour and create exactly the soup you desire to serve proudly.

Instructions

1. Estimate how much soup you have simmering in your pot. It's not necessary to be exact, but a rough estimate is needed to thicken the soup properly with flour.

2. Measure 1 1/2 tsp. of flour for every cup of soup. Place this flour into a small mixing bowl.

3. Add two times as much cold water or broth as flour. For example, if you have a pot full of 8 cups of soup simmering, you will need 12 tsp. of flour (1/4 cup) and 24 tsp. of liquid (4 oz.) mixed together to make a paste.

Mix the flour and liquid well to make a smooth paste.

4. Pour the flour paste into the simmering soup and stir it well to completely incorporate the paste into the soup.

5. Simmer the thickening soup for approximately 10 minutes, stirring constantly. The soup should thicken nicely during this simmering time. Remove the soup from the heat.
