The Cabernet Franc grape is the lesser-known parent to the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. That being said, if you are a great lover of the big bold flavors of a Cabernet Sauvignon, but are turned off by the tannins, pick a Cabernet Franc. You won't be sorry you did.
Instructions
1. Discover the flavors of Cabernet Franc. Think of it as a subdued Cabernet Sauvignon. It leans more toward fruit flavors such as plums and dark cherries, with earthy and herbaceous undertones. It is lighter in body and in tannins and has a medium to short finish.
2. Know its other names. Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley is often called Breton, and from Pomerol or St. Emilion it goes by the name Bouchet.
3. Learn where the best Cabernet Franc is made. Cab Franc's from St. Emilion in Bordeaux are considered to be the best wine made from 100 percent Cabernet Franc grapes. Try Chinon les Petites Roches or Saumur Les Nivieres.
4. Check out Cabernet Franc made in the United States. Consentino and Chapellet wineries have received great reviews for their Cabernet Franc.
