Make a tulle tutu for your toddler.
Tulle tutus make beautiful and fun dress-up costumes for toddlers. They can wear them around the house to play in or wear them for dress-up occasions. A tutu can be made in just a few hours with no sewing necessary. If made extremely short, the tutu will stick straight out like professional ballerinas; when made longer, it will look like a princess skirt. Make the toddler in your life a fun costume in any number of colors.
Instructions
1. Hold the elastic around the waist of your toddler. Wrap it so it fits snugly but doesn't cut off her circulation. Make sure it overlaps by about 1 inch. Cut off the excess elastic.
2. Place hot glue on the end of the elastic and press the other end into it. It should be one large loop at this point. Allow the hot glue to dry; it should take less than a minute. If you would rather, you can sew the ends of elastic together with several passes under the sewing machine needle.
3. Measure the toddler from the waist down to where you want the tutu to fall. Double the measurement and add 1 inch. For example, measure from the waist to her knees; if that measurement is 8 inches, your final measurement will be 17 inches.
4. Cut the tulle from the spool in 17-inch increments. Because the tulle comes in 6-inch or 8-inch-wide rolls, this is the perfect width. If you are using a bolt of tulle, you also need to cut it down to the correct width.
5. Pick up one strip of tulle and fold it in half so it is, in this example, 8 1/2 inches long. Hold the folded loop of the tulle under the elastic band. Pull the two tulle tails up and over the elastic, passing them through the loop; pull the tulle tight. This creates a knot that will not come undone by a toddler.
6. Knot the strips of tulle around the elastic until it is as full as you want it. Trim any scraggly ends of tulle that may be sticking below the rest.
