Putting together an easy-to-make Indian costume can be fun, regardless of how crafty you are. Even if you are not a champion seamstress, gathering the proper materials for a Indian costume is not too difficult. Indian costumes may be used for costume parties or for Thanksgiving-themed school plays.
Costume Materials
If you don't want to sew a costume from scratch, scavenge what you need to make a perfect outfit for a boy or girl. Rummage through old closets or even old chests of clothes in your attic or your family's. Search vintage stores and thrift shops for old costumes that can be improvised into an Indian costume. A roomy shirt and pants made of suede work best. Add fringe to the shirt and pants to complete the look.
Creating the Costume
It might be difficult to find a pattern for an Indian costume. You can improvise with a pattern for a lounge pant and a tunic shirt. For a girl's Indian costume, find a long tunic-dress pattern. Create a headdress, whether with a simple beret or construction paper. Add feathers around the base of the hat for an authentic look.
If you don't want to sew a costume, create one with the scavenged or vintage tunic shirt, lounge pants, moccasins or suede shoes, headdress, beads and fringe. A girl's costume should include pants and a shirt or tunic dress. Add beading or fringe to her costume, as an authentic costume would likely have been more decorative.
Accessories
You can add other accessories, such as a battle ax. Purchase one from a costume shop or make one with construction paper. Moccasins are ideal. If you can't find any, shoes with suede on them work, too. Leather chokers are great jewelry accessories for girls. Stringing beads along the fringe is another simple way to embellish an easy-to-make Indian costume.
