Fish With Chicken Livers

Bring home a haul using chicken livers as bait.

For the fisherman who tires of baiting his hooks with meager earthworms or artificial lures, chicken livers are a more substantial alternative. Chicken livers are readily available at your favorite grocery store or in the refrigerated aisle of your local bait shop. Though they are commonly used as a catfish bait, most types of fish will be drawn to them. As fresh livers are quite slippery, a bit of preparation is required for them to stay attached to your hook.

Instructions

1. Open the container of chicken livers and drain the excess fluid into a sink.

2. Spread a sheet of aluminum foil onto a flat surface exposed to direct sunlight.

3. Arrange the chicken livers on the foil so that they are spaced several inches apart on all sides. Sprinkle a liberal amount of garlic salt over the livers so that each one is heavily coated.

4. Allow the livers to dry for at least four hours in direct sunlight or overnight in cloudier conditions.

5. Place the livers in a sealable plastic bag and freeze them until ready for use. If desired, you may sprinkle more garlic salt onto the livers at this point.

6. Bait the liver by piercing its center with your hook and pushing it completely through. The liver should rest in the bottom curve of your hook.
