Christmas Salad Ideas

Serving a colorful salad in a trifle dish is a festive means of presentation.

Whether you need a Christmas salad recipe for a large feast under your direction or you are looking for a dish for a Christmas potluck meal, you have many options for festive, tasty fare. Most salad recipes can be altered to fit individual taste, so you can leave out or add whatever ingredients you choose. Place your Christmas salad into an attractive clear or holiday-themed glass serving dish for a joyful motif.

Layered Salad

Layered salad gives you the chance to make an elegant presentation, especially if you place it in a trifle dish, which is a clear glass dish with straight sides allowing you to see the individual layers contained within. Place lettuce, thawed frozen peas, chopped red onion, chopped boiled eggs, shredded cheese, sliced plum tomatoes and cooked and crumbled bacon in layers inside the dish. Rather than using one large layer of each, divide each ingredient into two portions, and layer one set, then repeat with the next. Top with the creamy dressing of your choice. The bright colors of the ingredients will add to the festivity of your table.

Crunchy Cabbage Salad

A crunchy cabbage salad will complement any Christmas feast, but especially those featuring ham as the meat course. Mix a bag of prepared coleslaw veggies with toasted almonds, sesame seeds, chopped green onions and two packages of crushed ramen noodles in a serving dish. Place olive or vegetable oil, white vinegar, a bit of sugar and the two flavoring packages from the noodles -- preferably beef -- into a container with a lid. Shake vigorously, then pour the vinaigrette over the salad and toss. Serve immediately, as the "crunchy" portion of the salad will become soggy if allowed to sit long. This salad also provides a visually attractive, colorful side dish for your Christmas table.

Sweet Salads

Two colorful sweet salads that can be served together or separately at your Christmas dinner are fluffy pink salad and green pistachio salad. To make fluffy pink salad, mix a large can of crushed pineapple with a large box of strawberry gelatin and heat the two until the gelatin dissolves. Place the mixture in the refrigerator until it is partially set, then add a container of cottage cheese, a large container of frozen whipped topping, thawed, and chopped pecans. Mix together and place into a festive serving dish. Refrigerate until completely set before serving.

For pistachio salad, mix a small can of crushed pineapple, small can of mandarin oranges, small package instant pistachio pudding mix, small container of frozen whipped topping, thawed, and a handful or two of miniature marshmallows. Fold them together and place in a serving dish. Refrigerate until serving.
