Places To Have High Tea

Though high tea is a thoroughly British invention, many restaurants around the world now offer this dining option. The foods offered at high tea vary widely, but you'll always find pots of high-quality hot tea on the menu.

Definition

Epicurious defines high tea as a late afternoon or early evening meal. The British originated the concept, which began as an early dinner for working folks, in the late 19th century.

Food served for high tea includes substantial dishes such as Welsh rarebit and meat pastries, breads like scones, crumpets and biscuits, and sweets such as cakes and pastries. Diners usually can choose between several varieties of tea.

Fortnum & Mason, London

The elegant restaurant is on the fourth floor of the store and serves high tea every day of the week. Since the company has been importing tea since 1707, the selection available to diners is broad and imaginative.
