Cut Kiwi Fruit

Serve desserts, side dishes and even main dishes with sliced kiwi for an attractive presentation.

If you want to create an elegant fruit salad, side dish or dessert, you can lay slices of cut kiwi on the plate to add color and a fresh taste. The kiwi's green flesh surrounds a white center with black, edible seeds, creating a colorful display on a platter. In addition to the kiwi's attractive presentation, it provides potassium and vitamins A, C and E. The kiwi's brown, hairy exterior may deter some people from buying kiwi, but individuals who know cut it correctly can create a treat for the eyes and the stomach.

Instructions

1. Let the kiwi ripen until you can make a small indentation in the fruit when you press your thumb into it. A rock-hard kiwi will not peel or cut properly and it will have no taste. However, once a kiwi over-ripens, you cannot peel or cut it but can only slice it open in the middle and scoop out the insides. Over-ripened kiwis taste sweet and delicious but don't add to a dish's presentation like a sliced kiwi does.

2. Cut off the kiwi's top and bottom with a small paring knife.

3. Peel the brown, hairy skin off the kiwi with a paring knife. Take as little skin off as possible, as the fruit tastes delicious right under the thin skin. When you have finished you should see a green, shiny fruit.

4. Place the fruit on a place on its side and slice or dice the kiwi, depending on how you want to serve it. Don't remove the black seeds (unless you don't like their taste) as they provide a rich source of the essential fatty acid alpha-linoleic acid.
