A healthy breakfast is the best way to start your day. Studies show that it improves concentration, sharpens problem-solving skills and lifts your spirits. People who consistently enjoy a healthy breakfast benefit from an increase in the daily intake of important vitamins and minerals, a reduction of fat and cholesterol, better weight control and a reduced risk of heart disease.
Instructions
1. Forget the sugary pastries and cereals. They may give you a quick start but usually leave you sluggish and tired by mid-morning. They're also deficient in the important minerals, vitamins and protein that you need to start your day off right.
2. Create a breakfast meal combination, which includes at least three of the recommended foods groups. Refer to the U.S.D.A. food pyramid for helpful nutritional information when planning your healthy breakfast meals.
3. Choose a variety of foods consisting of whole grains, low-fat protein, dairy and fruit. When you include a complex carbohydrate, protein and a small amount of fat in your morning meal, you won't experience those feelings of hunger a few hours into your day.
4. Think about non-traditional breakfast ideas. Leftover vegetable pizza, a baked potato or tortilla filled with vegetables and cheese, or fresh fruit topped with yogurt and a crunchy granola cereal are some good choices for a nutritious morning meal.
5. Make a breakfast smoothie by blending equal amounts of yogurt, milk and 1/2 tsp. of vanilla. Add your favorite fruit to the mix and enjoy your drink with a slice of whole grain toast.
